COMMERCIAL v PD DATABASE
========================
I bet you always knew that the ST was able to handle things other than
those suicidal Lemmings. What about indexing your record collection or
maybe a catalogue of STEN issues - you need a Database but which one ?
Read on for the lowdown of the software to separate Tina Turner from
Meat Loaf.
Database is an expression to identify a group of programs written to
manipulate Data (sounds reasonable !) but not all Databases do the
same thing. There are several categories that Database programs could
be set in but for our purpose, there are just two - FREE and NOT FREE.
Public domain versus commercial publication, in which direction should
you jump, I for one cannot answer that, if you require a Database,
then it is generally for a specific purpose and if you know the depth
of your requirements, then you can start looking in the two sections
of the ST World and make your own decision, this article is intended
as a guide only, to make you aware of some features to look for, not
which is the best PD Database or which commercial program gives you
most features for your money.
Within the Public Domain, there are dozens of Databases ranging from
general use to specific enthusiast orientated programs, for example I
looked at one on a Database compilation disk that was tailor made for
Record/Tape/CD cataloguing and was rigidly set up to handle that type
of Data, other popular subject areas are Name/Address/Telephone files
all geared up for personal rather than business use, all have the
advantage that they are quicker and tidier than a Card Index file
but that basically is all they are. Almost all PD Databases are Flat
File Databases which use the computers power to list, search, sort,
print out and in most cases these will do the job you might have in
mind for them but if they don't, it has only cost £1 or so to find
out.
The commercial side of the Database market is aimed at the user who
wants more than a list of 2nd Aunts who live in Seaside Towns and who
might be worth writing to around Easter. While the quality of PD in
many cases is quite high, in general, the commercial Databases are
there because they have extra's to offer such as printed
documentation, features that enable the user to customise exactly to
his own requirements and more importantly full integration with other
products on the market such as Word Processors for 'Mail Merging' and
Spreadsheets for number crunching Data, raising invoices, stock
control and much more. Superbase for instance has the ability of
taking Data from one file and combining it with information held on
separate files. This type of 'Relational' Database is ideal if you
wish to produce a Statement or present your Database information in a
different way. Prodata uses Variable Length Fields which means you
don't waste memory or disk space with fixed length fields and where
you need a lot of characters, the field will automatically expand to
accommodate your Data. Prodata will also accept files on the ST which
have been created by Prodata on a MAC, AMIGA or PC, this together with
a myriad of other options is the difference between PD and many
Pounds.
So if you are looking to catalogue your record collection or keep a
Christmas Card List, then the best suggestion is look into the PD,
there IS something there that will suit your application down to a
tee, but if you want something more, particularly ease of use,
documentation and technical backup - you pay your money and take your
choice from the half dozen or so options available.

around, if you are not sure if a Database will do the job, write down
your specification and ask the Distributor.
